According to historical accounts, the area was named after "Sir John Widger, Knight, Lord of the Manor," who gave his name to this picturesque locale, as noted in Risdon's Survey of Devon in 1714. Broadwoodwidger is a parish in Lifton Hundred, part of the Archdeaconry of Totnes and the Diocese of Exeter, although it was transferred to the deanery of Trigg Major and the Archdeaconry of Cornwall between 1875 and approximately 1919.

The cottage is conveniently located about eight miles east of Launceston, Cornwall and 13 miles west of Okehampton, Devon. It’s approximately 6-8 miles from the historic market town of Tavistock (a delightful place to visit during any of the seasons). The charming village of Lifton is only 3 miles away offers a variety of options for dining and leisure. You'll find a large hotel, a boutique hotel, a country pub, a deli, a local shop and post office and a nationally award winning farm shop. Lifton also boasts a park, a football pitch, and plentiful woodland for dog walking, making it an ideal spot for outdoor activities and leisurely strolls all within walking distance of each other.

The heart of Broadwoodwidger beats within the walls of St. Nicholas Church, a historic gem that dates back to 1288. The church's font and chancel arch are believed to have been constructed during that period. The Wyger family and Sir John Wyger, in particular, played a significant role in the church's history, as he was the patron of the church in 1288. Major restoration work in 1871 rejuvenated the church's interior, and in 1966, the roof was renewed in the old barrel-vaulted style, signifying a commitment to preserving its heritage.

The village of Broadwoodwidger also holds its own unique stories. A Celtic cross found at Buddle now stands proudly outside of St. Nicholas Church, and a rare fern leaf beech tree, believed to be around 400 years old, graces the area. The old ruined rectory, once used as a schoolroom, now serves as the Church Hall, echoing with the whispers of history.

Additionally, the village has witnessed the establishment and evolution of various chapels, including Thorn Cross Baptist Chapel in 1881, Downicary Methodist Chapel in the mid-nineteenth century, and Rexon Cross Chapel, which closed its doors in 2013 after 153 years of worship.
