iWalk Cornwall is a collection of over 300 circular walks in Cornwall available through an app for Apple and Android (search App Store/Google Play for “iwalk cornwall” and read the reviews). The app we have developed offers many of the advantages of an organised walk (being guided around the route without worrying about getting lost, lots of information about the history and wildlife all along each route) combined with the flexibility of doing the walk in private in your own family group, whenever and wherever you want, at your own pace and stopping when and where you like. We have researched over 3,000 snippets of local information for the walks which include a blend of history, wildlife, flora, foraging info, recipes, physical geography and science. The app automatically adjusts the wildlife info based on what’s in season on the day you are doing the walk (e.g. bluebells in May or heather in August). The app has been continuously used and improved for over 10 years and about half of our users are locals (including ourselves to regularly check and update the routes). Real-time information includes the distance remaining, current walking speed and distance to the next direction. The app also shows the user’s location on a map and which way they are facing. The app warns users if they wander off the route and detects if they rejoin the route further ahead from departing it. By measuring the user’s individual walking speed, the time remaining is estimated and battery drain is measured and projected, warning the user if their battery is unlikely to last the walk and offering assistance to address this. For evening walks it also keeps an eye on the sunset time and warns if you’re likely to run out of daylight. Walks are purchased via the app Download and enjoy some spectacular Cornish Walks!
